Through the Magnifying Glass: Perspectives from a Flower Delivery Man

The best part of my day is seeing the reaction of all the recipients when they open their door… their open mouth and smiling eyes bring me a lot of satisfaction and joy. It makes all my effort worth it.

As told to Angeline Lee

This is the first part of a series focused on giving insider access to readers who would like to know how florists work and what occurs on a daily basis. We asked various members of our team at YOU AND NO OTHER Flowers to share their experience and first up is David Neo, who joined our flower delivery team in Singapore in February of this year.

It may puzzle readers as to why we have decided to interview one of our deliverymen instead of our florists, but if you think deeply about it, flower delivery is one of the most crucial and high-risk aspects of our business. It is during the transportation process of flowers that our product, given its fragile and perishable nature, can easily deteriorate or worse, be absolutely ruined.

I used to deliver home and kitchen appliances before joining YOU AND NO OTHER Flowers in Singapore. I thought that was challenging because it can include backbreaking work such as lifting a fridge up multiple flights of stairs to a customer’s flat. However, I now find flower delivery to be a lot more stressful. Here are my reasons why:

First, the weather in Singapore is not exactly conducive for flowers. This is because the often-sunny days and high humidity can easily wilt flowers that are not properly looked after during the delivery process. As a result, my team and I constantly look over our shoulders to see whether the floral arrangements and hand bouquets are in excellent condition. Fortunately, our florists have taught us (the delivery team) how to monitor the flowers effectively. We know how and when to make adjustments to the water levels for each floral arrangement and can regulate temperature and humidity depending on how long the flowers have been in the vehicle.

Customers of YOU AND NO OTHER Flowers also have extremely high standards when it comes to our door-to-door delivery service. There have been several occasions where I have had to deliver flowers at a specific time – 11pm sharp, as an example! While I find the challenge somewhat thrilling, it nevertheless adds pressure and makes me feel like I’m taking part in the Amazing Race. We are also not your normal deliverymen. We try our best to look presentable because YOU AND NO OTHER Flowers prides itself on service; our experience includes more than just luxury flowers. This is a big change from previous jobs where I could turn up to someone’s house with a microwave in hand while wearing shorts and slippers.

Perhaps the biggest reason why flower delivery is more stressful is because we know how much importance our customers place on the act of sending flowers, especially when the flowers are from YOU AND NO OTHER. As a married man myself, I understand the significance of sending these exclusive and luxurious flowers to my wife – unlike a faulty appliance that can be easily returned, with flowers you only have one chance at creating a lasting impression and beautiful memory. Many of our customers choose to send flowers from us on major milestones like marriage proposals, anniversaries and birthdays. I wouldn’t want to spoil the occasion by delivering less than perfect flowers.

Although it may appear I am complaining and that I find my job to be high-pressure and quite stressful, I really love what I do. The best part of my day is seeing the reaction of all the recipients when they open their door or see us in their office lobby with the flowers in our elegant powder blue boxes. Their open mouth and smiling eyes bring me a lot of satisfaction and joy. It makes all my effort worth it.
